fallout

fallout

I was already working on the series of paintings to do with migration when the catastrophic tsunami in Japan overwhelmed the nuclear reactors at Fukushima. This painting came out of that - the image of people fleeing for their lives, driven by, and shaped by, the wave of water and nuclear fallout.
On the right of the painting - a 200x100cm. diptych - is the fatally damaged reactor; safety lies to the left, past the smaller enclave of hidden disaster.

In all the paintings in this series, I used collage canvas shapes - I call them unids, my word for unidentified units of migration
