In early 2026 a series of big storms and big seas in Start Bay caused major damage to the road, known as the Slapton Line, cutting off access to Torcross from the north. There has been a long history of major coastal erosion in Start Bay, with the abandoned village of Hallsands, and the threatened sea defences in Beesands and Torcross.
